Gabriella's STEM Challenge
A competition for middle and high school girls and non-binary students
What: Gabriella's STEM challenge is a competition designed to inspire interest in science, technology, engineering, and math among young girls.
Who: All middle and high school girls and non-binary students. No experience in STEM required!
When: Submissions are due October 31, at midnight anywhere in the world.
Why: The gender gap in STEM professions is prominent: despite making up 48% of all workers in the United States, women make up just 27% of those employed in STEM fields. This disparity is also apparent at the collegiate level across multiple fields; for example, in 2020, women were awarded just 25% of the bachelor's degrees and 21% of the doctorate degrees in physics. These discrepancies begin as early as elementary or middle school, when young girls aren't encouraged to pursue interests in STEM.
This year's prompt
1, In a 300 word essay or 2 minute video, share the STEM topic that captivates you the most. Explain why it fascinates you, and show us why this topic matters to you and the world!
2. Describe an aspiration that you have in STEM. What motivates you to pursue this goal and what are the obstacles standing in your way? (100 words)
until the submission deadline!
